In Psalm 12:1-4, the psalmist looks toward the hills and asks where true help comes from. The answer is clear and confident, help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. God never sleeps or grows tired. He watches over His people faithfully and constantly, providing steady care through every step of life.
Devotional: Lent has a way of reminding us how much we need help.
As we slow down, reflect, and pay closer attention to our hearts, we also become more aware of our limits. We notice how often we feel uncertain, anxious, or simply worn thin. Psalm 121 meets us right there with a simple, grounding truth, our help comes from the Lord.
That may sound like a familiar phrase, but it is a powerful promise.
The psalmist begins by looking up toward the hills, the places that often symbolized danger and difficulty in the ancient world. Then he asks an honest question, where will my help come from? Instead of turning to his own strength or cleverness, he turns his eyes toward God.
Lent invites us to do the same.
The disciples saw Christ’s glory on the mountain, but they still had to walk through confusing and challenging days afterward. In those moments, they needed to remember what this psalm declares, God was watching over them even when the road felt uncertain.
Psalm 121 reminds us that God’s care never takes a day off. He does not get distracted. He does not grow tired. He does not fall asleep on the job. While we stumble and worry and struggle, God remains steady.
That is deeply comforting.
So much of our stress comes from believing everything depends on us. This psalm gently lifts that weight from our shoulders. We are not the ultimate guardians of our own lives. God is. He keeps watch over every step of our journey.
Lent is not about proving how self-sufficient we can be. It is about learning to depend more fully on the One who never stops helping us.
When we don’t know the way forward, we can still say with confidence, my help comes from the Lord.
Action: Name one concern that feels heavy today and consciously hand it over to God in prayer, trusting Him to be your help.
Prayer: Faithful God, thank You for watching over us day and night. When we feel uncertain or overwhelmed, lift our eyes back to You. Remind us that we do not walk this journey alone and that Your help is always near. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
Thought for the Day: We are never without help because we are never without God.
Psalm 121 reminds us that our help does not come from our own strength but from the Lord who never grows tired of caring for us. During Lent, we learn again to lift our eyes to God and trust His steady presence for every step of the journey.
